To be a baby, one, two, three or ten years old. It is not easy to be a little child under the threat of war and hunger. During The Second World War, thousands of Finnish children were evacuated to the neighboring countries in Scandinavia. The film War Children describes the journey of these children to the great unknown: Sweden. The trip could last a few months, several years, or a lifetime.

The transportation of almost 80,000 Finnish children is the largest child evacuation in the world. Trains, boats and airplanes transported children almost daily from one country to another. In the film, former war children recall their memories. They talk about a strange language, new parents, and about returning to a home country badly shaken by a long war. The unique archive material shows us glimpses of the children’s lives.

The audience can enter into the world of the children and their capacity to survive.
